Activity Policy
Japanese Society of Aromatherapy is a nationwide research group of medical professionals with clinical doctors playing the key roles, organized for the purpose of properly applying aromatherapy treatment in the medical field

In July of 1997, “Medical Aromatherapy Organization” was first established by the volunteers to spread “correct aromatherapy” in the medical field. It was promoted that same year in November and began its activities officially as “Japanese Society of Aromatherapy”. The first general meeting was held in Osaka at Senri Life Science Center in February of 1998. This meeting collected 510 participants from all over Japan which clearly showed how high the level of interest on aromatherapy in medical field had been.

Aromatherapy in medical field must be an evidence-based medical aromatherapy and not the traditional psychological-world aromatherapy. However, although there had been many books published in Japan on aromatherapy, none of them were found to be satisfactory from a medical standpoint. Applications of aromatherapy in medical field would require the medical professionals to have sufficient understandings of how aromatherapy is viewed from the alternative and complementary medicine perspective, to provide sufficient information to the patients to obtain their informed consents and to conduct aromatherapy not just for relaxation but instead for care and cure of the patients.

In order to accomplish this goal, medical professionals such as doctors, nurses, midwives, hygienists, pharmacists, acupuncture and moxibustion practitioners, dietitians in the field who are well informed about patients’ medical history should study aromatherapy and aim for the improvement the patient’s quality of life. Please give us your support in building Japan’s aromatherapy.

Membership Conditions
Japanese Society of Aromatherapy is organized basically by the medical professionals. Those who meet any of the following conditions are eligible to sign up for the membership.
1) Medical professionals including doctors, dentists, nurses, midwives, hygienists, pharmacists, practitioners of acupuncture and moxibustion, dietitians, etc.
2) Current students of universities, graduate schools, junior college, vocational college, etc. which trains those students expected to acquire medical license
3) Corporation or sole proprietorship that agrees to the objectives of Japan Society of Aromatherapy

Authorization Program
Japanese Society of Aromatherapy’s authorization program certifies those members who meet certain conditions that society specifies as “society authorized medical professionals”.
Once authorized, these members could publically appeal themselves as “authorized medical professionals”

Application Guideline

≪Aromatherapy in Medical Treatment≫
Japanese Society of Aromatherapy is a nationwide academic organization of medical professionals with clinical doctors playing the key roles, organized for the purpose of properly applying aromatherapy treatment in the medical field.

Application Procedure

If you wish to become a member, please read the above guideline information as well as the regulations of the society carefully and mail the necessary items indicated below to the Japanese Society of Aromatherapy Office. Your admission will be accepted once the approval is achieved at the board of trustees meeting.

Individual Members
1) application form
2) resume (it can be in any format and style but the paper size must be B5)
3) a copy of receipts for the Membership fee and annual fee
4) a business card (if available)
5) any proof of the qualification (a copy of the medical license, a copy of the name list from the working hospital which indicates the type of job conducted, a copy of the members list from the medical association

Corporate Members
If your company agrees to the objectives of the society, please mail the necessary items indicated below to the Japanese Society of Aromatherapy Office. You will be contacted once approved at the board of trustees meeting. Once you are notified of this approval, please pay the membership and annual fee via bank transfer. Your admission will then be officially approved.

4) Background of the representative
5) Written pledge indicating to follow the decision of the Council.

About the Authorization Program
Each applicant’s clinical experiences, period of being a member of the society, experiences on aromatherapy, etc. in his/her field will be taken into consideration and the paper test will be conducted. Authorization will be provided to those who have passed.

Authorization Criteria
Applicant must be a member of the Japanese Society of Aromatherapy currently involved in the clinical treatment and must satisfy the following items.

1. General authorization (From April 2002 - )
based on the paper test

2. Participation points
1) General meetings: participation = 15 points, presentation = 15 points, joint presentation = 10 points, chairperson = 10 points
2) District meetings: participation = 10 points, presentation = 10 points, joint presentation = 8 points, chairperson = 8 points (including the district sponsored study meeting
3) Paper contributions: first author = 10 points, co-author = 8 points
